Konehete Park
in Murphy is alive with activities of all kinds, including baseball,
softball, soccer, tennis, basketball, volleyball and trout fishing.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park
in the country, lies 20 miles north of the county line. Over 500,000
acres of the highest mountains in the east and 800 miles of trails
await hikers.
Five auto race tracks are within earshot of Murphy - Tri-County Race
Track, Smoky Mountain Raceway in Cherokee, Sugar Creek Raceway and
Blue Ridge Mini Speedway in Blue Ridge, GA, and Copperhead Motocross
in Blairsville, GA.
Archaeologists have found more rock carvings and paintings in
western North Carolina, especially Cherokee County, than anyplace
else in the state. Most of the rock carvings, called petroglyphs, in
this area are about 4,000 years old.
Visitors and
residents can learn folk arts at Brasstown's famous John C. Campbell
Folk School, a Danish model folk school founded in 1925.
