Fairs,
festivals and other special events often take center stage in the
county. America's oldest wagon train is the highlight of the Old
Fashioned 4th of July Celebration in Andrews. As autumn colors
arrive, the National Appalachian Jeep Jamboree in Murphy, and the
Antique Car Show in Andrews are popular events.
Several golf courses in the area range from championship to amateur,
with golf pro shops. Many have discounted golf equipment and great
restaurants.
There are nine reservoirs within a short drive of Cherokee County.
The density of water bodies in the area make it a boater's haven,
providing them beautiful scenery, good fishing and uncrowded
waterways. Appalachia, Cherokee and Hiwassee lakes, all impounded by
the Tennessee Valley Authority, are in Cherokee County. Hiwassee Dam
is the highest overspill dam in the world at 307 feet.
Cherokee County could be one of the best areas in the country for a
variety of whitewater experiences. The Ocoee River, the 1996 Olympic
venue for whitewater kayaking, forms out of Ocoee Lake about 20
miles west of the county line.
